What Paper Weight Is Best for Zines?
Understand gsm and pound labels, then choose a weight through a printed, folded test.

There is no single best paper weight for every zine. The useful choice depends on the number of folds, the amount of printing, the binding and your printer.
A small one-sheet zine and a photo booklet with a separate cover place different demands on the paper.
What gsm means
Gsm means grams per square metre. It describes the mass of a standard area of paper, so it lets you compare weights without the size of the sheet changing the number.
It is not a direct measurement of thickness. Two papers with the same gsm can feel different because their construction and surface differ.
Pound labels need more context. “Text,” “bond” and “cover” refer to different paper categories. The PaperPapers comparison chart shows, for example, that 20 lb bond is approximately 75 gsm, while 80 lb cover is approximately 215 gsm.
Use a small trial range
As practical starting points to test, consider:
| Use | Suggested trial |
|---|---|
| A first one-sheet folded zine | Ordinary copy paper around 75–90 gsm |
| Inside pages of a stapled booklet | Compare approximately 90–120 gsm |
| A separate cover | Test a heavier sheet your printer and binding can handle |
These are trial suggestions, not required specifications. A sixteen-panel accordion creates many folds and may need a different choice from a simple half-folded booklet.
Check your printer's supported media before buying. A paper can be suitable for a zine but unsuitable for your machine.
Look for the problem you want to solve
If the reverse side distracts from the text, compare opacity. If the booklet will not close comfortably, compare thinner papers or reduce the number of sheets.
If the cover feels too flexible, a separate heavier cover may help without making every inside page heavier.
Changing the weight does not solve every issue. Dark photographs may need image adjustments, and smudging may come from a mismatch between paper and printer settings.
Judge a finished sample
Print both sides if needed, fold all the sheets and assemble them. A single loose page cannot show the thickness of the complete booklet.
Turn through it. Check that the paper moves comfortably and that the binding reaches through the stack.
Write down the exact stock and settings once the sample works. Use that information for a repeat run rather than trying to remember how the paper felt.
